Yueh-Ching Chou has a PhD in Social Work from the University of Minnesota in the US and is currently Professor in the Institute of Health and Welfare Policy at the NYCU. Her research work is done in close co-operation with disabled activists, parents and practitioners, and focuses, e.g., on supporting people with disabilities in the community, quality of life, independent living, personal assistance and reconciliation between paid work and unpaid caring among mothers of children with ID. Her recent studies employ an inclusive and emancipatory research paradigm in which disabled people are in the leading position.

Experience


Yueh-Ching Chou has worked as a community social worker in Taipei City, as a social administer working at the Department of Social Affairs, Ministry of Interior, as a formal care worker in a residential setting working with people with an intellectual disability, as a counselor working with frail elderly at a public nursing home.Yueh-Ching Chou identifies herself not only as a researcher but also a practitioners and an activist advocating disabled people‘s opportunities to live independently in the community. Before she completed her Ph.D. program, she had been a social worker in Taipei City and a care worker for people with intellectual disability (ID) at an institution and at a nursing home for frail older people in Taiwan. Her doctoral thesis focused on an intervention developed for families who had a child with ID. Intervention development and program evaluation has since become her research expertise. Her research work has been linked with her involvement in the disability movement and in close co-operation with organisations of disabled people. She also employs inclusive and emancipatory research paradigm in which disabled people are in an influential position. Her research has extended on reconciliation between paid work and unpaid caring among mothers of children with ID. Her recent research focuses on disabled and older people‘s independent living, older parental/maternal carers of ageing offspring with ID and their life stories. She is a co-editor of a new international journal, International Journal of Care and Caring (IJCC), which was launched in 2017 by Policy Press, UK. Since 2022, she is a chief-editor of a Taiwan journal, International Journal of Social Work and Social Welfare (IJSWSW). 

She is also a Scientific Committee member of the Transforming Care Network, and she get Outstanding Research Award (ORA), The Ministry of Science and Technology, 2021. http://www.transforming-care.net
