2022-01-20

Thank you, Dean Tsuo-Hung Lan and all the staffs from Tsoutun Psychiatric Center, MOHW, for arranging this rich and fulfilling visit. We all enjoyed the day!
🌿There is some recommendation from our first-year Master student, Mohamed Abdalle Osman from Somaliland.
I am writing this letter to show up my positive reflection among our last visit that we have visited on Tsoutun psychiatric center. This center was well prepared site which was equipped by well-trained staffs. In appearance the environment was look like good and attractive while the patients were busy to do their assigned activities. Brief introduction was given us by administrative professors those explained us how they receive, diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate the patients.
Furthermore, the attractive activities we saw during our visit include; rehabilitation department, these department was look like a small factory which produces different items while patients were t producers or factory employees that designing and making deferent items, which produce a product for sale on to the market. In addition, the other groups had cooking skills-they are professional cookers-then they cook and sell some foods and drinks. In order be socially fit, they are working as groups, at the same time to benefit their stored energy as well as to acquire new skills, the center prepared to them body exercise facility and skill training platforms. overall, this site was a good example of how well the MOHW succeeded decentralizing health service, particularly in prioritizing of mental health.
In short it was good opportunity for me to be familiar how Taiwan mental health and psychiatric centers works, so this visit gave me full view about how psychiatric centers services structured in Taiwan. I would like to send m special gratitude to the IHP office in NYCU, those were planed us this visit, specially I would like to thank, MS. Venies, Ms. Kelly, and Ms. Sue, those was backbone for this visit. Finally, I am suggesting these two recommendations:
1. As the staffs told more than nine hundred visitors they receive every year, those 75% of them have been admitted, therefore the heavy load of people seems to be beyond the site capacity, so I suggest either to expand the area, or to promote the MOHW to establish other centers around that area, to split the people in to different groups and reduce the work load.
2. Also, health research institutions and mental health schools should carry out research to analyses factors those determine mental health problem and risk factors those predispose Taiwanese people to mental illness.

IHP facilitated an invitation to the Tsoutun Psychiatric Center, MOHW, where students were introduced to Taiwan's mental health service. The staff shared their knowledge about different phases of care that people with mental illness undergo, which we must say is holistic. After presenting the institution's operation, we were given a tour of the facilities. We were amazed to see how long term inpatients were recruited into providing service and products. The trip was well organized and I believe their information can definitely be used in our respective countries. I would recommend it to be an annual event.

Sharing a little recap of my visit to Tasotun Psychiatric Center, MOHW in Nantou, Taiwan
Despite all the limitations and restrictions, I am beyond grateful and appreciative of the opportunity to visit the Tsao-Tun Psychiatric Center, a center that was founded over 20 years ago. Upon visiting this center, my classmates and I were informed that long-time ago, mental health resources in Taiwan were scarce and the need for mental health services was tremendously increasing due to better physical wellbeing for its citizens.
Interestingly this is one of the only public mental hospital in central Taiwan in the past decades, with a mission to provide long-term care for the poor psychotic patients without family support. With a team of excellent and competent staff, the center is one of the essential services with establishment of Substance Abuse Therapeutic Community, which accommodates residents who dependent on various kinds of substance, ranging from Heroin, amphetamine, ketamine, and even alcohol.
This center also provides individual and continual occupational therapy to help patients recover and welcome a beautiful life.
Home away home is one thing that was shown to be evident at the center, where we saw that they provide patients with substance abuse therapy and preventive propaganda to reduce harm and help them blend into mainstream culture, strengthen social adaptabilities and improve quality of life.
Having seen patients at work creating the many beautiful things some people take for granted on the outside allow for me/us to appreciate the little things even seen as insignificant. With that, the clinic refers patients to simulate work situations, providing bonus to affirm the meaning of productive roles. The talent and potential by the patients are extremely mind-blowing and has proven that even in such condition, life still continues. Being told that some patients have not seen a family member in months, or years still allow for them to feel comfortable in that the center arrange leisure-oriented activities to relieve stress, provide emotional expression and cultivate habits.
With all that was shared and shown, I’ve decided to share this experience at the Taso-tun Psychiatric Center with my superior (s) and certainly try to adapt same at all if not most levels.

from Vietnam 🇻🇳.
It is an excellent chance for me to visit the Tsoutun Psychiatric Center- MOHW in Nantou. The journey gave me an insight into its multifunction, including mental health treatment, daycare, occupational therapy combined with educational programs. One of my favorites is nursing homes for assistive-need elderly. The house is decorated with blessings for the lunar new year. The elderly feels familiar, like their home. In my view, if I have another chance, I will come to the Tsoutun Psychiatric Center again to update this model for caring for patients in Vietnam.

I had the great opportunity to visit the Tsoutun Psychiatric Center, MOHW over the spring break. We were graciously hosted by the director and a team of staff , who gave a thorough overview of the purpose and mission of the center. We were guided on a tour of the facilities, where I got to see first-hand the many great factions the center had to offer. I was most impressed by the level of involvement the patients had in their care, which really emphasized the people centered focus approach , the center is based on. With programs like the hydrophobic farm, gym facility, the garden, and the in- patient run café, the center has a lot to offer in terms of quality of life , in additional to comprehensive treatment. It was a good experience for me to see what Taiwan facilities are like and had great take always for my own Country. I definitely recommend visiting the center.

We visited the Tsaotun Psychia Center (MOHW) during this winter break. We were guided through numerous areas of the center by staff, which plays an important role in public mental health in Taiwan. They have invested in highly qualified staff that provide the best quality care for the patients. We were able to witness for ourselves the quality care provided by these staff and how they work with a multidisciplinary team to provide the best quality care. We saw first-hand how they take care of patients, the different areas, and the importance of preparing patients for inclusion into a society in the best moment for them. The experience of learning about the public mental health system in Taiwan offers was extremely rich for me as an international student. I hope to take the best information and pass it on in the future.
